Dr. Raymond J. Gorte's Profile

Important Criteria for Student Writing

Professor Gorte considers the following elements very important in student writing:

  • reasoning and evidence
  • grammar and mechanics
  • style
  • organization
  • demonstrating mastery of others’ ideas
  • having original ideas
  • following the discipline's citation practices

Professor Gorte strongly discourages the use of figurative language in scientific writing. He believes that students writing in scientific fields should seek help from scientists for improvement.

Personal Writing Process

Professor Gorte mainly writes research proposals and scientific articles for journals. His initial focus is primarily on the figures (diagrams, graphs, flowcharts) obtained from his research. The body of the paper is then assembled according to the figures. He bases his arguments on the images presented.
