Penn Professors on Writing in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
Dr. Talid Sinno
About the Professor
Dr. Sinno received a BSE Chemical Engineering and BA Chemistry from Penn in 1991 and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998. His research program is broadly aimed at the theoretical and computational study of nano and microstructural evolution, particularly nucleation and growth, in condensed matter.
Important Criteria for Student Writing
Professor Sinno looks for:
- reasoning and evidence
- organization
- demonstrating mastery of others’ ideas
- having original ideas
- following assignment instructions
- grammar and mechanics
Professor Sinno strongly suggests that students establish a clear scope for their paper before beginning so that they can avoid including irrelevant details or missing out crucial information.
Writing Process
Dr. Sinno mainly writes research papers and articles for scientific journals. He begins the process by forming an outline based on the key results of his research, usually in the form of images. He then writes the paper section by section. He strongly recommends the writing handbook The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and E B. White as a resource for writers.
