Personal Writing Process

As a writer, Professor Lowry takes particular interest in translation projects, often translating Arabic and Persian text of the past and then analyzing them to shed light on the conventions of the time. Unsurprisingly, then, Professor Lowry places special emphasis on close-reading any texts being examined. A keen eye for the texts being assessed, he observes, is a key step towards more effective ancient history writing.

What he writes

Professor Lowry has authored many works on the legal and cultural history of the Islamic Middle East, including Early Islamic Legal Theory: The Risala of Muhammad Ibn Idris al-Shafi'i. He has also edited several volumes including Essays in Arabic Literary Biography II: 1350-1850.
